How to Create A Swoon-Worthy Holiday Tablescape

We put the girls behind The White House Co. to the test to create the ultimate holiday tablescape using some of our favorite kitchen finds throughout the mall. Scroll to see their tips and tricks for creating a swoon-worthy table for a season full of holiday entertaining…

‘Tis the season to be Merry… and attend and host all of the holiday parties that go along with it!

When entertaining, one of the biggest impressions one can have on their guests that is often overlooked is the table. No pressure, right? Have no fear, we are here to help you create the perfect tablescape without any of the stress! Here are some tips & tricks to help you along the way…

Start from the bottom

Start with the bottom and work your way up by first adding a fun colored table cloth, or in our case a table runner (how fun is this polka dot one from Creative Kitchen?). This isn’t a necessity but it definitely sets the mood and the theme of your table. You can also get creative and add different layers; we decided to get crazy by adding some amazing gold wire netting that creates a little shimmer and shine to the table.

Pick a focal point

The next thing to think about is your focal point. Adding a floral arrangement is one amazing way to create color and beauty. Talk to your local florist (we chose our favorite ladies at Love Always Floral), share with them your color theme, think outside the box, and you will create something that will be talked about! Feeling creative? Pick your own fresh cut stems and greenery and get designing! Tip: Don’t have anything too overpowering or high in height. You don’t want to be talking through or over your centerpieces as holiday parties are all about great company and conversation and you don’t want to create a wall between guests.

In this particular tablescape, we decided to add color elsewhere so we opted for a variety of greens provided by our local gals at Love Always, instead of colorful florals. Simple can sometimes be the best strategy, and it saves on budget, too!

Decide on dishes

Now comes the fun part –  the dishes. Use what you already have, mix and match, get crazy! A top trick of ours is using shades of white. It has become a favorite color to play off of as it’s clean, crisp, and oh-so-pretty. We fell in love with these classy white plates from Martha Stewart (which can be found at Macy’s), paired with natural wood bowls (also from Macy’s), and we certainly can’t forget about these fantastic place mats that are marble with gold edging glam. We fell in love with this David Tutera line from Herberger’s. Tip: Place mats can help bring out your table setting when used in a contrasting color, and chargers can have this same affect.  {Chargers are a larger plate that goes under and highlights your dinner plate}.

Another fun trend that we are in love with is the mixing of metals. We added a mixture of metals throughout our table through candelabras, gold silverware, and copper mugs (one of our favorite holiday pieces – you can get these beauties at Creative Kitchen!). This creates a table that will shimmer and glisten throughout the evening. We just about fell over when we came across these metal and wood accessories to accent our table from JCPenney, from their new housewares line called Urban Farm. As the saying goes, “it’s all in the details”!

Get seasonal

Finally, pull in some seasonal elements to finish off the look. We used items already on hand, and we always encourage you to look at what you have laying around the house or in storage for holiday decorating and re-purposing it for your tablescape. By using just greens with our runner we were able to pull in some fun colors by using some dip dyed bottle brush trees. We also pulled in some additional green hues with green glass drinkware, and last but not least, we added some color to the table {because we LOVE color} by filling a bowl with vintage Christmas bulbs. A table full of muted yet lively tones will leave your guests ooo-ing and awe-ing!

Now dim the lights, start the music, celebrate and be merry!
