We must admit, Pantone is always spot-on when it comes to their famous Color of the Year, and each year we wait in anticipation to see which hue is going to be popular for the new year. With so many possibilities, we really never know what’s coming (unless we do a little digging into popular fashion week hues), and we were just as surprised with this year’s color choice than we were with last year’s Greenery. Although it’s an unexpected hue, we are so excited to see how this color makes it’s way through fashion, beauty, home decor and more!

Without further ado, introducing…

Ultra Violet

Ulta Violet is a bight and bold shade of Purple, that promotes a sense of imagination and wonder. Here’s what Pantone had to say about their color choice:

A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.

Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.

Enigmatic purples have also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality. Nuanced and full of emotion, the depth of PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.” – Pantone Color Institute

Although we expect this color to take over the racks a little closer to spring, we already saw glimpses of Ultra Violet already in our stores…

Where to Find It Purple Dress: Loft | Purple Sweatshirt: Pink | Hunter Boots: Tradehome Shoes | Tie: Halberstadt’s | Fitbit: Macy’  | Kids Ugg Boots: Stride Rite | Crocs: Stride Rite | Notebooks: Francesca’s | Unicorn Keychain: Francesca’s | Necklace: Francesca’s | Tassel keychain: Loft | Eye shadow: Sephora | Lip gloss: Sephora

We expect to see this color all over the racks in everything from clothing to many different accessories. The category we see this hue taking over is beauty – with it’s boldness covering the lids and lips of makeup mavens. We can also see it adding a bit of boldness to the home decor category, that tends to to stick to the muted and earth-tone hues.

If you’re crushing on this color as much as we are, you may be wondering how to pair it with other colors in your wardrobe. Have no fear – we’ve put together a little guide on our favorite color combinations…

Ultra Violet + Gold

It’s hard to keep our superstitions at bay with this one. We’ll let the colors speak for themselves – Vikes fans, anyone?

Ultra Violet + Red

Ultra Violet and Red make a rich vibrant color combination that goes far past the pairing of clothing items. You’ll see this combination transpire into home decor and florals as well!

Ultra Violet + Pink

We get a moody retro vibe from this combination, and know we’ll be seeing it pop up over the spring in summer months, especially in resort and swimwear.

Ultra Violet + Green

If you can get past the retro dinosaur flashback, this color combination embodies chic and spunky vibes.,

Ultra Violet + Black

Although they say ‘black goes with anything,’ there are certain color pairings that are pure perfection – starting with this one!
